ASO Analogue Switch Off of TV

keeper015

Analogue BBC Two was permanently switched off in the early hours of Wednesday 10 October. Freeview digital channels, including BBC Two, are available for the first time to thousands of viewers served by local relay transmitters.

Some relay sites in NI have never had Channel Five Analogue or Digital Terrestrial TV. Many people in Ireland on East Coast and South of Border are now getting Freeview for the first time or a more reliable signal. The BBC A mux. is now at full power from Divis & Brougher Mountain. This is particularly a big boost for Brougher Mountain reception.

(Pictured left is disused aerial Array on Keeper Hill, Tipperary used
to be used to pick up Brougher Mountain UK analogue TV from NI for
relay on MMDS and Cable in Limerick).

Saor is Gaelic (Irish) for Free and is pronounced "seer" as in seering meat in a pan.

Saorview is Digital Terrestrial in Ireland using DVB-T (DVB-T2 tuners will work), HD, MPEG4 H.264. HD downsampling on SCART is needed for non-HDTV with setbox. MHEG5 middleware. A regular UHF aerial is used for reception.

MHEG5 on XP

DVBviewer 4.8.1 (€15) is out and adds improved MHEG5 support.

Update to previous 4.8.0.1 released 3rd June 2011. Fixes some bugs seen below

The MHEG5 is a plug in to be purchased separately (€10).

Here is a Preview Video (youtube) of MHEG5 on DVBviewer

I will review later.

With 2nd June 2011 Version 4.8.1 of DVBviewer pro the MHEG bugs of time and video scale are fixed.

One "bug" is due to having wrong "DirectX" Renderer. On XP you need

[X] Use Custom Renderers

 [ VMR9 Custom Renderer ]

(On Win 7 use EVR Custom Renderer)

Consent for New Services on Saorview

Good News: RTÉ's new Saorview services are approved. This means the Information Campaign can start.

Interesting conditions attaching to Specific Channels

  1. RTÉ Two HD Select channel is required to be carried on the second multiplex.

  2. The knowledge gained from technical trialling of the HD channel will be shared with other broadcasters
  3. RTÉ should aim to provide for full HD versions of RTÉ One and RTÉ Two as soon as practicable and by mid 2013 at the latest
  4. The RTÉjr/RTÉ Plus channel shall be carried on the first multiplex until 1 September 2011 and from 1 September 2011 shall be transferred to the second multiplex
  5. No advertising is permitted on the RTÉjr or RTÉ News Now channel
  6. In respect of RTÉjr and RTÉ News Now, RTÉ shall review Phase 2 of these channel proposals on foot of the suggestions set out in the public consultation in order to further enhance the public value of the channels.
  7. RTÉ Plus: Phase 1 only is approved and for a period of 4 years only until February 2014.

We like the "no advertising" clause on RTEjr and RTE News Now. Proper Public Service Broadcasting!

Why is it any business of DCENR how the PSB multiplexes are organised if channels are approved? That should be purely an Engineering decision.

What DSO?

We (Techtir) have had a Work Experience Student doing a survey this week. The results are very bad.

DSO Digital Switch Over. The fact that Saorview is now available officially since 29th October 2010, though full Launch is May 2011

Why we need MHEG5 EPG on Saorview

It's evident that the look, feel and user interface to EPG (electronic Program guide) varies dramatically between Windows 7 Media Center, 3rd party PC programs, Digital TVs and Set-box that can all receive Saorview.

This is not a good thing, and confusing to ordinary consumer.

There is a solution

Freeview Australia has launched its long-awaited electronic programme guide using MHEG technology provided by the UK’s Strategy & Technology (S&T).

The Freeview EPG will, for the first time,  provide a consolidated platform for the consumer when navigating Freeview channels, and will also provide consistency of experience across multiple digital TVs in the home, so that the consumer only has to learn the navigation once,” said Robin Parkes, CEO of Freeview Australia.

Walker WP11DTP Saorview STB - First Impressions

I got my first look at the WP11 set top box yesterday.

It's smaller than the older WP10, with a metal casing, painted black and a red 4 digit display for channel number, and a blue LED to indicate it's on (red for off).

Looks wise, I think it looks cheap and tacky, especially the red digit display, where many other electronics use VFD

Connectivity wise, at the back, it has HDMI, stereo phono output, optical output, USB port, Scart and of course RF loopthrough.  And then the jack input for the external power supply.

The remote layout is not great either, again it seems bland.  I hope to put up images soon.

However, on with using it!

I plugged it in, and after the short boot period, it starts with initial setup.  The setup is very easy.  Start off with language, then onto country, what resolution you want your HDMI port, and a Yes/No option for Auto scanning.

Public Awarness? What about Manufacturers?

Saorview certification is just a convenience for retailer and consumer to take away guess work.

Distributors and Manufacturers in a sense should be smarter.

We started joint operations yesterday afternoon. It was a long day, but all parties did a great job and worked very hard to get the spacecraft (SC) mated to the payload adapter (PLA). Today the SC/PLA stack was mated to the Breeze M and is vertical in Hall 101 undergoing joint electrical testing.
It’s awesome to see the SC mated to the Breeze M. The great thing about joint ops starting is that we are getting closer to the launch!
